A branch is connected to a pressurised main in five stages. Consumers on the line keep their water supply throughout.

What is hot tapping?
Hot tapping is a method of making a new branch connection on an existing pipe while it is still in service and under pressure. A tapping sleeve and valve are fitted to the pipe, and a tapping machine cuts through the pipe wall inside a sealed chamber.
Will consumers lose their water supply during the work?
No. Hot tapping and line stopping are done while the main stays in service, so consumers on the line continue to receive water throughout the work.
What is the difference between hot tapping and line stopping?
Hot tapping creates a new connection on a live pipe. Line stopping temporarily isolates a section of a live pipe, usually with a bypass, so that it can be repaired or a valve replaced.
